Food Parcel Distribution During The Covid-19 Pandemic
22 April 2021
Since the level 5 lockdown it has been hard for every citizen in our
country from the street vendors up to the top management of big corporations.
On the township and rural areas it hid rock bottom as many household were
really in need of a helping hand as also the breadwinner of each household were
affected.
The government has been of much help to the people living in our country as
there were food parcels that were being issued to each and every province in
the townships and rural areas looking at number of dependants per house. The
Department of Social Welfare in Gauteng implemented the special food relief
programme in March 2020 as the country in all parts was in hard lock down.
The special food programme had distributed food relief to over 537 388
families in Gauteng reaching over 2 686 940 people in Gauteng. The programme
was created for households that were in needy of the food parcel and also those
who meet the requirements of the department. Not only was the department
the only one issuing the food parcels but also there were celebrities and
soccer players and also business owners who also helped the department like
Siphiwe Tshabalala and his wife Bokang Tshabalala who were also part of
donators, Patrice Motsepe's club Sundowns was also involved and also The Gift
of the Givers which is one of the well known donators not only during the
pandemic but also at old age homes and universities like the University of
Johannesburg.
Onkemetsi Kabasia the deputy director general for Social Welfare services
said on social media there has been misleading information on the food parcels
that the general public was allowed for everyone no requirements were needed
and also that the food parcels were being sold to people who can afford to
purchase them. Kabasia said the posts were incorrect and misleading the
community of Gauteng because in surrounding areas in Katlehong there was a
strike based on the food as the commutors were conscent on the matter of food
parcels being sold. The social media has been writing about the department of
social welfare and painting it in a form of it will be seen as the place of
misconduct because of the misinformation that only the relatives of those
working for the government will only be receiving the food parcels and also
that there was no need for registering.
The Deputy-Director-General for Social Welfare services says that presently
the food parcels distribution has now been on the low scale since the lockdown
levels have been uplifted. Kabisi warned people about the incorrect and
misleading posts made on social media about giving food parcels to the general
public and also she has encouraged the public to follow the social department
social media platforms in order to be informed with the correct news.
Kabisi has also stated that may all the citizens try to be patient with the
government during these trying times as it is also difficult for the government
because there are always news leaked which mostly is false information that
contradicts the public and makes that misleading information makes the citizens
stay in awe of what might happen next.
The government really made an impact on helping the citizens of South Africa. So we can say covid19 came as help in other ways, when we're people gonna receive parcels from the government
ReplyDeleteSo informative and newsworthy . Thank you so much for sharing this 💚💚
ReplyDeleteThe food parcels really helped some communities that were struggling especially during the level 5 lockdown
ReplyDeleteThey did a good job in helping people during difficult days.
ReplyDeleteThe food parcels came at the right time I must commend the social welfare for always priotising the needs of the public
ReplyDeleteThey really came at the right time where masses really needed the food parcels
DeleteThe action taken by the government was really helpful because most people suffered a lot during lock down.
ReplyDeleteThe food parcels were a relief because staying home without food was a pandemic on its own
ReplyDeleteIt truly was a relief especially for people working piece jobs as it hit hard on them.
DeleteThe delegates from the provinces indicated their main challenge was the lack of coordination in the distribution of food parcels. They also drew attention to the fact that the demand for support from the community generally far outweighed the resources available. Initiatives had been implemented to improve the distribution process, as the lack of coordination between role players had hindered the delivery of food parcels.
ReplyDeleteThe misleading information made the matter worse because it gave people the hope that every household will receive the food parcels
DeleteI just wish people could learn that misleading information can have an impact on people's lives as it influence them to follow the wrong path and also make wrong decisions if people have researched and followed reliable sources they wouldn't have strike on food that was meant for people who cannot afford to buy groceries

ReplyDeleteIt's a shame that people could be spreading such rumours when they are people out there that are suffering and need help.
ReplyDeleteIt was really sad because everyone believed that food parcels were for the general public whilst they were for the less fortunate.

ReplyDeleteFood parcel distribution has become of help to those in need. The pandemic has left many household going to bed with empty stomach, children been send back home as when the world is trying to fight the poverty around the world and we know when sending a child to school you help them to fight the poverty through their education and now the pandemic has increased the number of people who will be unemployed with no food on the table and they can still survive with the food distribution or the grant relief but it will not be enough as these society need something solid to depend on.
